I watch the rain while sitting in the car waiting for the time to pass, so that I can continue with my driving class. The sound of the rain drops soothes me.
Time is a lot like water...
Water is older, granted, seeing how time is a concept entirely made up by humans. Water was there from the time when the planet was still young, long before even the simplest of the organisms appeared. The days keep repeating themselves, limited to only seven different varieties, because the humans only divided "time" into seven days and only came up with seven names. The water of course has a more permanent sense, since it has been here from the beginning. The water we feel falling upon our faces is the same exact water that fell upon faces of people thousands of years ago. It is forever renewed, yet still very much the same. It is just recycled billions of times. But it is still the same rain. Just like time, water as a whole, can not really be created or destroyed..... Which relates them to energy, but that is a different concept entirely.
Why does time exist? In the context of the “spacetime theories” of the special or general theory of relativity, this question should be more appropriately phrased as “Why does spacetime exist?” Time is part of the fundamental intellectual structure (just like space and number) within which we sequence events, quantify the duration of events and the intervals between them, and compare the motions of objects. In this view, time does not refer to any kind of entity that "flows".
Altered states of consciousness are sometimes characterized by a different estimation of time. Some psychoactive substances (such as entheogens) may also dramatically alter a person's temporal judgment. When viewed under the influence of such substances as LSD, psychedelic mushrooms and peyote, a clock may appear to be a strange reference point and a useless tool for measuring the passage of events as it does not correlate with the user's experience. At higher doses, time may appear to slow down, stop, speed up, and even go backwards when under the influence of these agents. A typical thought might be "I can't believe it's only 10 o'clock, but then again, what does 10 o'clock mean?"
